This Friday, kick in the July 4th weekend with a NeverNotWorking
Radio takeover in celebration of their 1 year anniversary with EVR.
First, Oskar Mann is going to fill in for Mark Ronson
tonight @ 8pm (ET) with DJ Harley Justice
(Allido Records).
Then,
the guys join The Block
to bring you a special four hour chunk of the freshest radio; Never
Not Working the Block.
Later
in the night, a very special guest, hip
hop icon and legend Milk Dee,
will join the party. They asked Milk to dust off his records
(literally) and come and rock
it true school style.
Don't miss this Friday Night when Milk is
chillin' with Radio Rios,
Oskar
Mann, and The Block.
What more can we
say? Listen live.
July 4th : Get Your Your America On!
<
The Weekend of Our Nation’s Independence (July 3-6)
The festival kicked off June 27 with the premier of the filmWhat’s On Your Plate?,
which will be screened again July 7.
July 5 is an all day Spike Lee
tribute and my guess is that ham will
make an appearance, which in itself is worth going for. There will be a
screening of the Making of Do The Right Thing and the film itself will
follow. July 6 is the screening of Afro Punk. Several other films will
be screened daily at BAM Cinema
as part of the festival. All films and
performers are rooted in the culture of Afropunk and created by members
of the community.
The skatepark will be open from 12-8 July 5th and 6th. They received
sponsorship from Nike and there will be $5000 in prizes and an all
expense paid trip to the X-Games courtesy of ESPN.
My bet is the
sponsors will be giving a ton of free stuff away too, stickers,
posters, t-shirts, anything with a logo on it should do. There will
also be demos from some of the top skaters and BMXers as well as some
lessons on how to get your extreme sport on.
July 12 is the wrap up for the festival, culminating into a Clinton
Avenue block party, between Myrtle and Willoughby, with food, DJ sets,
fashion, DIY vendors, live music, and local art. Based on the video
from last year’s festival I would suggest you bring a fierce
amount of aggression with you because Afropunks thrash, possibly harder
than those regular old punks.
Rilo
Kiley songstress Jenny Lewis
and Saddle
Creek’s own
Conor
Oberst, frontman of Bright Eyes
and Desaparecidos,
will play this
year’s free River to River
festival on July 4th. This year
the event is non-ticketed but you still need to show up wicked early if
you want a chance at actually seeing the band. The good news is, no
matter where you sit though, in or around the park, you will be able to
hear them. Still, wouldn’t you rather set your sights on
those two dreamboats?
This Broadway Backyard show takes place Friday July 3rd and Saturday
July 4th in Bushwick to showcase some of the best lo-fi/garage bands we
the label has right now. It showcases all their artists actually, the
likes of Crystal
Stilts, Cause Co-MOTION!, The Mayfair Set, Little
Girls (all Friday) and The Oh Sees,
Vivian
Girls, Kurt Vile,
Woods,
Dum
Dum Girls, The Fresh & Onlys,
Real
Estate (all Saturday) to
name a few! Tickets are $25 for both days and $15 for one. Broadway
Backyad is a great spot and it should be a great show and crowd, I
highly recommend. The label is giving away limited edition merch from
Woods, Blank Dogs, The Fresh & Onlys, and ZODIACS so go early.
Woodsist/Captured Tracks
Afterparty at Market
Hotel
More of an aftershow than an afterparty, but you can see The Fresh
& Onlys one more time as well as Brilliant Colors, Pink Reason,
and Babies (members of Woods, Vivian Girls, and Bossy). Starts at
midnight.
The Feelies
The Feelies,
opening act for Sonic Youth at last year’s
Battery Park show, are playing at Maxwell’s in Hoboken.
It’s a three day stint starting Thursday so you can see them
any of the other days if you don’t want to leave
New York and deal with the Jersey Shore commuters.
Union Pool
Union Pool
is having a party and there will be many many bands.
Stalkers, The Weight,
K-Holes,
Electric
Shadows, Ex-Humans,
Netherlands,
Fresh
Kills, The Hunt,
Sorceress,
Alana
Amram and the
Rough Gems, Headless Hookers,
X-Ray
Eyeballs, Jadewalkers,
Daddy
Longlegs, Georgiana Starlington,
Esque,
Screens,
Foster
Care,
Lovestruck,
Outta
Controllers, Miracles of Modern Science,
Dinowalrus
are all planned to perform.
Rooftop Party
Bachlelorette will be playing a live set for this year’s July
4th rooftop party which is taking place at Chelsea Museum of Art
on
West 22nd. There will be an open boor courtesy of Carlo Rossi and
Radeberger Pilsner, a great view of the fireworks, short films, and of
course, the music. Unfortunately it’s sold out, so if you
don’t already have tickets, don’t think about it.
Sorry for the tease.
Studio B Danceparty
This is your last chance to go to Studio B’s
July 4th DJ
showcase before it closes. This is three floors of DJs and reputable
ones at that. It begins at 8 p.m. and costs $20. Go shake it for
America.

Record
Release Party at Santos Party House Tonight
for the Cubic
Zirconia - Fuck Work EP
July 2nd - $12 - advance tickets on ticket web
The
guys from The Savant Guard
dropped the fully loaded Cubic Zirconia
- Fuck Work EP on my desk about a month ago and I'm still hooked on the
tracks when they come on in my iTunes. It actually isn't that
surprising that they play on heavy rotation considering I have the
songs saved in a number of playlists. What is shocking is that I still
wiggle a little and bounce around in my office chair every time one of
the remixes comes on. Cubic Zirconia is made up of Tiombe Lockhart on
vocals and musics, Nick Hook on musics and vocals, Todd Weinstock on
musics and vocals and Daud Sturdivant on musics and weak vocals (haha).
My favorite remixes on the EP are the Fuck Work Remix with Dances with
White Girls and the one by Nacho Lovers (and no, I didn't make either
of those names up) but the other remixes on there shouldn't be slept on

New News Category : Advice From Telephone Poles
<
Advice comes in many
forms, sometimes it's from your parents, sometimes it's from a friend
or mentor, sometimes you get advice from a book or from your
accountant, but sometimes the best advice can be found stuck to a
telephone pole right outside of our DJ booth.
IN THE BOOTH: The second edition of Stretch Armstrong's exclusive EVR radio show
Stretch Armstrong stopped by the EVR
offices and dropped a two hour show yesterday. He quietly slid into the
booth and effortlessly moved from
house to freestyle, electro pop and indie disco and came full circle
with prog, trance and a bit of garage. He pretty much covered
it all.
New tracks from Fools Gold's Duck Sauce, Clubfeet, Mike Snow and East
Village acid trobadors Cubic Zirconia were a few of our favorites.
As expected we had the speakers cranked and the windows open. Recreate
our perfect Tuesday afternoon via the magic of internet radio by

EVR Review : Discovery LP
Discovery LP
Release Date : July 7
Discoveryis less of a band and more
of a combined digital effort of two American indies who happen to be
from two of the genre’s most successful acts of the past two
years. One half of the duo comes from Vampire Weekend,
Rostam
Batmanglij, and the other
from Ra Ra Riot,
singer Wes
Miles. Together they have
created a full-length album filled with songs that sound like they
could make it to Top 40 if only the group wasn’t bound to
indie mediocrity when it comes to the public. These songs could
potentially fall upon the ears of the masses and be warmly received.
The guest vocals from fellow Vampire Weekend
member Ezra
Koening and Dirty Projector
songbird Angel
Deradoorian (who continues to
insist she wants to be our “boyfriend” on the
second track) reinforce the tracks, making them all the more relevant
to the current state of music.
They mix some of their own songs, even the hits from their separate
bands, with 8 bit beats (that are actually good), auto-tuned vocals (of
course my horse), and R&B or dub back tracks. All of these
elements really remind me of all the nonsense I’m hearing on
New York’s major(ly flawed) radio stations but with some
considerable improvements and without any significant failures.

Debbie Harry was born today (7/1/09)
There
has been a lot of death around the entertainment world lately,
especially with the media dissection of Michael Jackson's death. Well,
we have some good news... There are still plenty of people that are
alive.
Gay Beach
this week will take their sandals off and head north of 14th st. to a
far off place called Canada. Tedward will export himself and celebrate
our whacky neighbor to the north; the big ass Mountie County,
birthplace of Corey Hart, home to Moosehead beer and The Maple Leaves.
There is so much we still don't know about this wide land and its
countless inhabitants, so tune in live to Gay beach today (2-4pm ET) to
get a glimpse.
(Hey Ted, Are there even any beaches in Canada?)
Michael Jackson Tribute in Harlem gets a visit from TJ and The TUX
Thousands of people in Harlem, occupying ten city blocks, waited up to
twelve hours in the pouring rain to catch a glimpse of the Michael

at The Apollo. Within minutes, The Shock and Awesome
team slipped through the back door, boxing out CBS and Fox News to get
exclusive footage. Featuring words
from Al
Sharpton and Spike Lee
on
Michael Jackson's legacy.
EVR Recommends : Jay Reatard in NYC (Updated 7/3)
Memphis rocker Jay
Reatard is in town this week for
two shows, one of them is an all-ages freebie, July 1st at Stuyvesant Oval
on New York City's East Side just North of 14th St. (Between
1st Ave. and Ave. C ). The other is at Music Hall of Williamsburg
in Brooklyn on July 2nd with TV Smith of The Adverts and the
Screaming Females.
Update
7/3 :
Some
of the EVR staffers walked up the block and went to the free show at
the Stuy Town Oval and caught the last song only. For once a show
started when they said it would.
The next night for the Music Hall of Williamsburg gig we sent our
intern Katyann, who admittedly wasn't to keen on Jay's music but we
thought she might change her mind if she saw it first hand. Here's the
resulting review:
After five or six songs, Jay Reatard’s first address to his
audience was: “Who fucking farted?” That same
nonsensical attitude carried throughout the show. His voice, raw at
times, squeaky and comical at others, drove kids totally crazy.
How Jay or his bandmates can even see their audience is a miracle
through their long fluffy man-manes. They played the shit out of their
instruments, Jay and his guitarist working matching guitars at times,
or Jay on acoustic at others.
This guy is all about the show, barely pausing between songs and taking
only a moment to come back out for the encore only to retrieve TV Smith
who thereafter performed another couple ragers. I love a quick encore,
don’t you? It really says a lot for the band and how much
they care, or how quickly they want to get out of the Music Hall of
Williamsburg, which continuously draws the strangest of crowds.
He definitely knows how to market himself as well. His merch table was
filled with vinyl and a collection of 7” he offers through
his club, “whatever” link here. Half of the people
in the audience were dancing in the crowd with their Jay Reatard LPs up
in the air.
Jay Reatard is pretty hunky so there were girls in booty shorts
everywhere flailing their arms around and clapping their manicured
hands to Jay’s punk rockin'. It’s probably why the
thrashing was so weak. I’d expect more of an active crowd for
such a righteous dude, but that doesn’t necessarily say
anything bad for Reatard, only his “fans.”

Review : The Most Serene Republic - ...And The Ever Expanding Universe
The
Most Serene Republic
...And
The Ever Expanding Universe
Release Date : July 14
The
Most Serene Republic makes me feel like I’m the most romantic
person on this blissful planet, for all of 40 blessed minutes. Here I
am, banging drums and wailing in profession of my love, I am simply
amorous for some undisclosed lover. It’s sort of how I felt
when I was 14 and listening to the Postal Service for the first time.
Swooning is inevitable when it comes to Ontario’s The Most Serene Republic.
If the expert tickling of the ivories don’t get you,
it’ll be the banjos and indie pop mini-jams. The band also
added some more layers to their sound and got a little more synth
oriented, which is enough to gain my nod of approval. Who said nothing
good comes from the north?

Review : Deer Tick - Born on Flag Day
Deer Tick Born
on Flag Day
(Partisan Records)
Okay,
so if Dylan
was aping shit when he was young, what’s the problem? We have
to work our way back to the roots somehow. It’s not like any
of us bought Charlie Patton for our first album. And if more and more
bands are being drawn to the deeper wells of musical history through Cat Power
and the White
Stripes, well, hmm . . . .
Originality, in and of itself, is only a weak virtue, and probably a
false one.
So, once again, where’s the problem?
And if you sat down and dismantled a bunch of songs off New
Morning
(B. Dylan) and hired a Del
Shannon imitator to sing over
the reconstructions, it might sound pretty damn good if you were in the
exact, specific frame of mind to tolerate it. At any other time,
however...

Review : Jay-Z (D.O.A.) Death of Autotune
Jay-Z
(D.O.A.) Death
of Auto-tune
While
15 and 16 year old kids fresh off their 2008-2009 school year are
downloading the newest Black Eyed Peas ringtone on their cell phones -
hip hop's true fans - the veterans of the real hip hop movement and
culture - are shaking their heads at the current state of the
commercial performers and sellouts they're seeing and hearing
everywhere.
There's no message, no realness and no respect for the decades of
ground breaking music the old school hip hop artists have done for
these new acts.
Almost every "Hip-Pop" artist out today has begun using this Auto-tune
trend which is, according to the Wikipedia page written on it, "a
proprietary audio processor created by Antares Audio Technologies that
uses a phase vocoder to correct pitch in vocal and instrumental
performances". Artists like Lil Wayne, T-Pain, Snoop Dogg and even pop
princess Britney Spears have used this effect to prominently alter
their vocals. Thank goodness someone finally put their fresh new Nike
Air Yeezy encased foot down on the trend - Jay Z's new
single, D.O.A. (Death of Auto-tune -debuted June 5th) is blatantly
stating that it's done, "played out", "dunzo", "it's a wrap" kids!
Check out the new video that had it's world premier right after the
2009 BET Music Awards (which we don't even want to get into) ended last
night. The video has a couple surprise cameos - one being the legendary
"tough -guy" actor Harvey Keitel. And remember everyone, the Auto-tune
trend began with Cher’s
“Believe”…just sayin. -Jeylan

ABC No Rio gets done right (we hope)
News To Us.
ABC No Rio
is a building in NYC that was founded-squated-"liberated" in 1980 during the Koch
administration, kept from getting slaughtered by the Giuliani
administration and now during the Bloomberg
bunch, have recieved 1.65 million dollars for building a new building on the
same property that they bought for 1$ (got to love this fucking town).
It all didn't happen as easily as the couple of sentences here though,
and the history is worth researching on your own time...what we're
saying is we're thrilled they made it this far. The musical/cultural
history of this building is also long and rich and was hard fought.
It's nice to see the little guys get some now and again. Our only worry
though is that the funds are controlled by the Department of Cultural
Affairs,
good luck.
Here
is some history of the space. Here
is the official site. Here
is an article about the recent events.
In The Booth : Cage, today @ 4pm [6/29]
Hip-Hop
artist Cage
(Def Jux records) is stopping by Chances With Wolves
[Mondays 4-6pm ET] today to promote his upcoming 2 night stint
at Brooklyn's Southpaw
(7/2 & 7/3).
"...the
Cage of today seems frightfully focused. His upcoming record, Depart
from Me, co-produced by El-P
and to be released in June, could be one of the year’s
surprising artistic breakthroughs..." - Spin Magazine
EVR Recommends : Marc Ribot @ The Stone [June 30th, 8pm]
For you
EVR listeners that like to dig a little deeper into your records, you will
surely know the name Marc Ribot.
For those who don't, he's the guitar player who helped develop Tom
Waits' sound on groundbreaking records such as Rain Dogs ('85), Franks
Wild Years ('87), Mule Variations ('99), and Real Gone ('04). He's also
appeared on recordings with Elvis Costello, Robert Plant, The Black
Keys, Allen Ginsberg, John Zorn and entirely way to many many more to mention (we didn't even bring up his solo recordings).
Don't miss his show at The Stone,
a new Lower East Side perfomance space in New York City on Tuesday the 30th at 8pm.
IN THE BOOTH: Your Vegas on Guilty Pleasure - Monday 8pm to 10pm ET
Leeds bred NYC
based Your Vegas
stops by Guilty
Pleasure tonight to play a few acoustic tracks and dj with
our resident indie cindy DJ Elhaam. These indie ballad escapists worked
their way up from what the band calls "toilet tours" up and down the
British Isles to opening for Duran Duran, The Bravery, Shiny Toy Guns,
and securing slots at mega-fesitvals Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, All Points
West and of course SXSW. We can't wait to see what they have in store
for us...
Veering from G. G. Allin’s murder ballad
“Layin’ Up With Linda” (with Dando
sounding just like Bill Callahan) to “Beautiful,”
The Linda Perry/Christina Aguilera song, the new Lemonheads record
might be accused of being contrived. As with his/their 1990 Favorite
Spanish Dishes EP, Dando embraces both the obvious and the expected,
the punk and the pop.
At a certain point, we have to wonder if the world needs yet
another Townes Van Zandt cover. I thought about it. And I listened. And
I thought, well, hell, we probably do, and maybe there just
aren’t enough. Particularly when done the way Dando plays:
with both respect and verve. If the record comes across as musicians
relaxing and having fun with material they respect, then so be it. Not
every record needs to be Led Zeppelin IV.
There are some clunkers. The cover of the “Green
Fuzz” is nowhere near as fun as the version done by the
Cramps, and you’ll just have to trust me that deleting the
track where Kate Moss sings will make you appreciate the record more.
There are a number of other tracks I would probably delete, if I was
feeling testy, and some that make me think too much of an unironic
Beck. That’s not a good thing. Not terrible, either.
Liv Tyler puts in a breathy frog-pop inspired take on Leonard
Cohen’s “Hey, That’s No Way to Say
Goodbye” and my favorite track is a muted and casual sweep
through Wire’s “Fragile,” which draws out
the sweetness of the original by giving it a country twist
with an understated guitar.
There are no great surprises here. Dando comes across as the
world’s best boyfriend, and the music’s mild
sedative-like qualities will make it worth a few late night in-bed
listens before you forget about it and just start listening to the
originals. -jessica trm
Morricone Youth Tonight [6/26/09]
This Sunday marks the
fortieth anniversary of the Stonewall Riots
and the start of the modern gay rights movement. Four decades ago, in
the small hours of June 28, 1969, the cops attempted to arrest/harass
the patrons of a West Village gay bar, The Stonewall Inn - something
the police did on regular basis, that night though; the fags, the drag
queens, the hustlers and the diesel dikes - still mourning the recent
death of Judy Garland - had had enough! They confronted the police, six
nights of clashes/protests spontaneously commenced and the "Gay
Power/Gay Liberation" movement emerged from the underground.
The riots will be memorialized this weekend with a series of events and
rallies culminating in the huge Pride March down Fifth Avenue - past
The Stonewall Inn itself - this Sunday.
Full info regarding the weekend's festivities can be found at www.nycpride.org.
For those outside of NYC - why not tune into Morricone Youth Radio
this Saturday,
10 pm - 12 am ET? Gray
Dolores -
the DJ-alter-ego of Robert Conroy, the vocalist for
glamorous-easy-listening-combo Misty Roses
- will be the guest host, as he does the fourth Saturday of each month.
Gray Dolores promises a proud program of soundtrack music - with an
emphasis on melodramatic film themes sung by loud ladies in sparkling
dresses.
Expect a lot of Judy, Liza, Shirley Bassey, Dusty Springfield, Dionne
Warwick, Edda Dell'Orso, Nancy Sinatra, etc., etc. and so forth.

Live Review : Effi Briest (6.24.09)
Live
Review: Effi Briest
June 24th , Secret Project Robot, Brooklyn.
by our resident resident, Mindy Abovitz
Effi Briest has
been in my peripheral vision for a while, their name comes from a
well-known German novel about adultery from a female perspective. Makes
sense for a band that has at least six female members in it at any
given time. I had yet to see them live until last night,
when they opened for Z’s
record release show at Secret Project Robot
in Brooklyn. Their stage set-up consisted of a pair of worn in wooden
congas, two vintage accordions, a drum kit, an old Casio, and plenty of
effects pedals to draw the audience in. Then six long brown-haired
striking ladies stepped onto the stage to begin a droney and amazing
set comprised of sexy drawn out bass lines, trippy guitar riffs, basic
& idiosyncratic drum beats laced with screamy erratic
child-like vocals. The six of them looked somewhat indifferent while
performing, but their coolness did nothing to offset their
music. We were all in an Effi Briest trance. I bought their
7” put out by Loog and can’t wait to flip it over
one hundred times.
